10/24/2011 - Spirent Extends Capability of GNSS Record and Playback Test System

New functionality reaffirms GSS6400 as the most versatile solution for real world testing

Paignton, United Kingdom – (October 24, 2011) – Spirent Communications today announced the launch of new functionality on its GSS6400 GNSS Record and Playback test system. Users can now benefit from record and playback of two channels of serial digital data alongside the digitized GPS L1, GLONASS L1 and even QZSS signals. This is particularly useful when designing and testing integrated GNSS devices.

The GSS6400 now records and replays serial data from a wide range of data sources. Inertial sensors, DR sensors, reference receivers and 1pps signals can be recorded coherently with the GNSS embedded within the data file to guarantee synchronization. Additionally, the GSS6400 can log serial data into separate files for subsequent analysis or post processing. NMEA logs or Wi-Fi war-drive data are amongst the types of file that the GSS6400 is able to record.

The GSS6400 has always offered a simple, cost-effective and efficient way to capture real-world GNSS signals and replay them in the laboratory, to which is now added the ability to record other, serial data. It records all the radio frequency energy in the specified bandwidth – GPS L1, GLONASS L1 and QZSS. Both the wanted GNSS signals, including SBAS where present, and the background noise (or interference) are recorded.

"The new functionality further strengthens the GSS6400 live signal test offering, saving engineers valuable development time and expensive field testing costs," said Rahul Gupta, product manager for Spirent's navigation & positioning division.

The GSS6400 is an easy-to-use, self-contained unit with everything needed to start testing. Additional peripherals such as personal computers, hard drives, external power and cabling are not required. With the GSS6400, test engineers simply connect the supplied antenna and press the one-touch record button. Recorded files can be selected either from the front-panel display or the intuitive web-browser interface and replayed exactly as recorded.

The GSS6400 unit is appropriate for a wide range of test applications, from optimization of GNSS chipset performance in difficult environments through to testing mapping applications and repeatable production testing. The additional capability now extends the scope into testing integrated and hybrid navigation or positioning systems. Typical tests include acquisition & tracking sensitivity, TTTF for cold/warm/hot starts, positional accuracy etc.
