01/06/2011 - Spirent Brings "Real-World" Navigation and Positioning Testing into the Laboratory with New Record and Playback System

The leader in GNSS test brings innovative, affordable new solution to market

Paignton, United Kingdom - (January 6, 2011) - A critical challenge to achieving the performance and quality of experience expectations of today's navigation and positioning systems is accurately testing user devices in complex and dynamic real-world scenarios. To address this issue Spirent Communications today introduces the GSS6400 Record and Playback System, a solution designed to improve device performance while reducing the need for and cost of field testing.

Consumer navigation and positioning products have to operate in very challenging signal environments such as urban canyons, indoors, under bridges and so on. Recreating these environments synthetically takes time as well as considerable knowledge and skill. Spirent's Record and Playback System (RPS) captures and subsequently replays complex real-world signal environments in the laboratory at a press of a button. This approach enables "real-world" lab testing by allowing the same signal conditions to be repeatedly replayed. The GSS6400 reduces the uncertainty and expense of field testing by eliminating differing sky signal conditions typical of live network testing.

The GSS6400 is designed to capture complex environments efficiently and with the fidelity to ensure playback that is truly representative of challenging real world conditions. Other record and playback solutions either lack the required level of fidelity or require huge data storage and complex expensive equipment. The GSS6400 unit is appropriate for a wide range of test applications, from optimization of GNSS chipset performance in difficult environments through to testing mapping applications and location enabled services.

This self-contained solution is ready to use out of the box and is designed specifically to accurately capture signal conditions to ensure meaningful test results, even in high sensitivity and complex situations. The captured data includes real world fades, multipath and in-band interference as well as direct signals from GNSS satellites.

The GSS6400 complements Spirent's established range of navigation and positioning simulation systems which generate the specific controlled signals that are needed to develop and test the performance of navigation and positioning systems.
