09/19/2013 - Spirent Demonstrates Combined Support for GPS, GLONASS, Galileo and Beidou Signal Testing at ION GNSS+ 2013

Demonstration reflects desire to combine GPS with other satellite constellations and alternative positioning approaches to improve accuracy and availability of positioning

Nashville, Tennessee – (Sept 19, 2013) – Spirent Communications, the leader in testing navigation and positioning systems, today announced that it is exhibiting test systems that support not only GPS but also BeiDou, GLONASS and Galileo signals. Spirent's demonstration, showcased at booth #F during ION GNSS+ 2013 in Nashville, TN, is one of the first in the United States to include the full constellation of simulated BeiDou satellites tracking with a multi-GNSS receiver.

GPS systems are gradually being supplemented by other satellite navigation systems including GLONASS (Russia), BeiDou (People's Republic of China) and Galileo (European Union). End-users benefit from improved availability as more satellites are visible from any point on the ground—even in deep urban canyons and challenging indoor/outdoor zones.

During the event, Spirent has two demonstrations that enable a full set of BeiDou signals to be seen and tracked by the receiver in the US. Usually BeiDou signals are only visible over China and neighboring areas. The first demonstration uses a multi-GNSS simulator, Spirent GSS6700, to generate GPS, GLONASS and BeiDou signals. The second demonstration uses a technique known as live sky capture and playback and uses the Spirent GSS6425 Record and Playback system to sample real signals collected using a regular satellite navigation system antenna. These samples are stored digitally and can be replayed repeatedly to facilitate testing.
